PRESS RELEASE Cambridge CAB, 15 February 2006 Can One Live Cheaper than Two? ‘At CAB, we have access to a calculating programme to work out the likely levels of benefits and tax credits for clients who live together and we can calculate “What-If?” assessments’, says Rachel Talbot, Chief Executive. When calculating eligibility for benefits and tax credits for a co-habiting couple, the income and savings of both partners are taken into account. These normally show that clients will be financially worse off co-habiting than living alone, particularly where children are involved – thus hardly encouraging ‘family unity’. ‘This is true even when you are a pensioner’, says Rachel. For pensioners, the ‘minimum income guarantee’ (via pension credit) for a couple is only around 50% higher than for a single person, thus discriminating against people who stay together. In view of the shortage of housing in the South-east and the lower life expectancies of single people, should the Government be targeting its financial support in this discriminatory manner, or does it even know?’ If you are uncertain about your situation CAB can help you with a calculation. Please call in for a demonstration or ring 0845 241 2555 (Income Maximisation Line) to ensure you are receiving all the benefits and tax credits you are entitled to. Cambridge CAB is open on Newmarket Road Mon-Fri 9.30 – 4 and Sat. 10-12noon. Alternatively drop in to outreach sessions at Girton GP surgery every Monday from 1-3 p.m. or John Huntingdon House, Sawston, Friday mornings 9.30-12.30. |
